From 26 to 31 December 2022, the Bündnis Freiräumen is hosting a Forum for Free Spaces in a former 6000sqm former vacant building in the Schillerstraße 38 near Hauptbahnhof.

There will be free workshops, lectures and discussions as well as exhibitions and a cultural programme. The topics will revolve around the activation and use of (public) spaces, content-related, creative and political dimensions of and for open spaces, self-organisation and much more.

A lack of free space affects us all. Living space, free space for art and culture as well as spaces for self-organisation are known to be extremely scarce resources. But how liveable is a city that lets its socio-cultural projects be nipped in the bud by a lack of space? Change of perspective: How often would we stumble upon something new, something innovative in our neighbourhoods again in the future if the city entrusted its free spaces to the citizens* for self-determined, sustainable design?

We declare our city to be our studio! And it should shine in all colours. Because the goal of the Forum for Open Spaces is not only to denounce, but to bring the topic of open spaces further into the discourse, to look at it from different perspectives and to negotiate it together in one place.

Throughout the five days of the forum there is a common thread that connects all formats. A common vision: within open workshop formats, acquired material from lectures and panels will be brought together. We want to discuss and apply what we have learned with each other, work out perspectives and open up possibilities for action. The forum will not only present the topic, but will also serve as a process-oriented experimental space. So that vacancies do not even arise in the future, but can be avoided in the best case.

This year's programme will cut across social themes and interests, but will continue to focus on open spaces, the empowerment and strengthening of collective structures, cultural education and socio-culture in Munich. There is also room for spontaneous formats, ideas, exchange and needs that emerge on site or in advance. Feel free to get involved in our Open Call / Call for Participation!
